Second suspect charged for November shooting of Colin Brown

A second person was charged Dec. 18 in connection with last month’s fatal shooting of 16-year-old Colin Brown.

Donovan Baucom, 28, was charged with first-degree murder, three counts of armed criminal action, first-degree assault and unlawful use of a weapon. He was arrested on Dec. 17 and is currently being held in protective custody without bond.

Baucom is the second individual charged in relation to Brown’s death. Garrett Jordan, 26, was charged on Dec. 13 with first-degree murder, first-degree assault, unlawful use of a weapon and three counts of armed criminal action in connection with the shooting. Like Baucom, he is also currently being held without bond.

Jordan pleaded not guilty in his first court appearance on Dec. 16. Baucom was set to appear in court on Dec. 19 at 1 p.m., though no information has been released regarding how he pleaded.

The two were caught after a witness informed investigators that a dark Audi vehicle often parked outside of the residence of another vehicle that was struck by gunfire while traveling southbound on I-55 during the shooting. Surveillance videos backed this claim up, showing the dark Audi following the driver from the residence on Minnesota Avenue to I-55 and back. According to charging documents, information was obtained from the Audi’s license plate that linked it to an address owned by one of Jordan’s family members.

This led to investigators obtaining a search warrant to trace Jordan’s historical phone location data. The data showed Jordan’s movements were consistent with the Audi’s movements before, during and after the shooting. Baucom’s historical phone data was then obtained, showing he was with Jordan throughout the day leading up to the shooting.

Further investigation found that Baucom’s sister lent the vehicle to Baucom on the day of the shooting. He returned the vehicle the same day, shortly after Brown was shot.

According to police, Baucom admitted to driving the Audi during the shooting while Jordan fired a rifle from inside the vehicle.

Brown, a student at Christian Brothers College High School, was struck by the stray gunfire on Interstate 55 near Loughborough while riding home from his hockey game. He remained in critical condition for four days before dying on Nov. 27.

This investigation is ongoing. More information will be disseminated once it is available.
