Springfield community gathers at City Hall for National Day of Prayer

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) - Dozens of people gathered outside Springfield City Hall on Thursday to recognize the National Day of Prayer.
This annual observance is held on the first Thursday of May each year.
Pastors from across the region offered prayer to those interested. The City of Holyoke also held a ceremony this afternoon. Pastor Vasily Ivanov with the Living Waters Fellowship Church told 22News, "Prayer is powerful, and when prayer was taken out of our country, something was missing because prayer is power."
President Trump signed an executive order establishing a presidential commission on religious liberty, questioning the separation of church and state. The Constitution's prohibition of a national religion has long been interpreted as a mandatory separation.
WWLP-22News, an NBC affiliate, began broadcasting in March 1953 to provide local news, network, syndicated, and local programming to western Massachusetts. Watch the 22News Digital Edition weekdays at 4 p.m. on WWLP.com.
