Springfield crash leads to arrest, loaded gun and drugs seized

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) - A man from Springfield was arrested on Monday after a loaded firearm and drugs were seized after a car crash on Allen Street.

The Springfield Police Department states that on Monday at around noon, a car crashed on Allen Street and drove away. During the investigation, detectives learned that one of the individuals involved in the crash had a firearm. Detectives began to surveil the area to try and locate the subject's vehicle.

Nearly half an hour later, a man was seen matching the description of the subject with his hand holding something inside his hooded sweatshirt. The man drove off, however, detectives maintained surveillance of the vehicle, and the Springfield Police C3 Metro Unit arrived to help.

The man was detained outside his vehicle after he stopped in a parking lot on Belmont Avenue. A loaded firearm was found in his hooded sweatshirt. The suspect, 21-year-old Dequan Wood of Springfield, did not have a license to carry or a driver's license. Over eight ounces of marijuana were also found, packaged to sell, inside a child's backpack in his car.

Dequan Wood was arrested and charged with the following:

  • Carrying a Firearm without a License
  • Carrying a Loaded Firearm without a License
  • Unlicensed Operation of a Motor Vehicle
  • Possession with the Intent to Distribute a Class D Drug
