City Utilities celebrates Clean Energy Week with green initiatives
City Utilities is celebrating National Clean Energy Week by sharing its efforts to reduce carbon emissions, invest in cleaner technologies, and provide customers with incentives and rebates to save energy and money.
SPRINGFIELD, Mo. -- City Utilities (CU) is celebrating National Clean Energy Week from Sept. 15-19 by sharing some of its efforts to provide cleaner, reliable energy and utility bill savings for the city of Springfield.
City Utilities says it is on track to meet the goals outlined in its Integrated Resource Plan (IRP), which is CU's plan to address future power supply needs. Following that plan, CU has reduced carbon emissions by 30% since 2025. CU's IRP calls for reducing carbon emissions by 70% by 2035 and reaching net zero by 2050.
CU says they are also investing in cleaner technologies. This includes three hydrogen-capable natural gas turbines at McCartney Generating Station, which will add 150 MW of electric generation and support future hydrogen fuel, and 36 MW battery energy storage at James River Power Station and Blackman Water Treatment Plant, which can capture renewable energy, according to CU.
Customers of City Utilities can also learn more about saving energy and supporting cleaner power while lowering their utility bills with CU's Smart Solutions. The program includes incentives and rebates for customers to make their homes more energy efficient, such as:
- Up to $500 back on insulation upgrades.
- $75 rebate for an Energy Star Smart Thermostat.
- Rebates starting at $350 for high-efficiency heating and cooling systems.
- Up to $75 back on high-efficiency toilets.
- Rebates for EV chargers and EV-ready wiring.
- $50 incentive for enrolling in CU Peak Rewards.
