Beware of Real ID schemes as deadline approaches

CHICOPEE, Mass. (WWLP) - The Real ID deadline is fast approaching, now just days away.

Experts are saying not everyone needs to panic. It only applies to people 18 and older, and if you don't have a Real ID, a passport also works. The RMV says nearly 60 percent of the state is already compliant, and they're offering walk-in appointments for anyone who isn't.

One thing to look out for, though, is that schemers are taking advantage of the rush for compliance. Be aware of online ads or texts, offer Real IDs or ask for your documents.

Remember, government officials will never call, text, or e-mail asking for payment or offering a service. The only way to get a Real ID in Massachusetts is by going into the RMV.

The ID will be required to board domestic flights and access certain federal facilities starting May 7. The ID is marked with a gold star in the right corner to let airport security know the person went through extra security and verification.
