MSU president nets positive review after first year

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. — After his first year in office, Missouri State University (MSU) President Richard B. Williams received a positive evaluation from the Board of Governors.

The board said Williams successfully completed all four goals that were established at the beginning of his tenure. In his first year at the helm, he focused on four key objectives.

Williams executed the presidential transition plan, which included conducting a comprehensive assessment of campus operations and establishing meaningful connections within the Springfield community, an MSU news release says.

Under his leadership, MSU developed a comprehensive five-year strategic plan that is said to guide institutional priorities and growth. He also defined core values and principles for the administrative team while successfully filling critical leadership positions.

Williams also notably oversaw MSU’s transition to Conference USA, which the university says marks a significant milestone in its athletic program development.

“President Williams has demonstrated exceptional leadership in his first year,” said Board Chair Tim Francka in the release. “His systematic approach to understanding our institution and community has laid a strong foundation for Missouri State’s future.”

Williams will receive a $600 salary increase, which is consistent with the amount given to all full-time university employees this year.

He also received a $50,000 deferred compensation incentive bonus as outlined in his original contract.

The release said Williams announced he plans to use the net pay of his bonus to create an endowed scholarship for MSU students.

“This first year has been about listening, learning and laying groundwork,” Williams said in the release. “I’m grateful for the support of our Board of Governors, faculty, staff and the Springfield community as we work together to advance Missouri State University’s mission.”

The Board of Governors expressed confidence in Williams’ leadership and vision for the university’s continued advancement.

His contract extends through June 30, 2029.
