Texas search operations halted due to additional severe flooding

Ongoing search and rescue operations in Texas were put on hold Sunday as an additional thunderstorm swept through the region, returning heavy rainfall and worsening already dangerous flooding conditions.

Authorities in Kerr County say rescue crews were pulled back today due and put rescue and clean-up efforts on pause as the threat of flash flooding has made recovery operations too dangerous to continue, at least temporarily.

The Lampasa River, only 25 miles away from the flash flood emergency in San Saba County, rose 14 feet in a couple of hours. Additionally, the Guadalupe River surged again overnight, forcing emergency crews to retreat to higher ground.

The human toll from this unprecedented flood event continues to climb. As of Sunday evening:

• 129 confirmed fatalities due to flooding across Texas.

• More than 160 individuals remain missing at this time.

• Dozens of counties remain under flood watches or warnings.

Gov. Greg Abbott has activated additional National Guard units to assist with search and recovery once conditions improve.
