Jury duty and active warrant scam calls reach Greene County

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. — The Greene County Sheriff's Office (GCSO) says scammers are calling residents, falsely claiming to be members of GCSO and demanding money.

According to a press release by GCSO, citizens are reporting they have gotten calls from GCSO stating they missed jury duty or have active warrants.

GCSO says they will never call you to demand payment over the phone for missed jury duty, warrants, or anything else. They also say they will never ask you to pay using gift cards, Venmo, PayPal, or any other online service.

"Scammers are often able to 'spoof' caller ID numbers, making it look like the call is coming from a legitimate government number. If you ever receive a suspicious call like this, hang up immediately," said the GCSO press release. "If you’ve already given out information or sent money, contact your local law enforcement agency."
