Summer sizzles a little longer ahead of big pattern shift

We've closed out the hottest week of the year so far. In fact, this run of heat goes back to last weekend. We've tallied up 9 straight days over 90°, and the heat streak will continue. Well, for at least a little longer.

A Heat Advisory remains in effect through at least Tuesday this week. Afternoon highs will climb into the mid to upper 90s with heat indices in the 100 to 110° range. Rain will be very tough to come by as well. For Monday, isolated showers will try to bubble up south of the interstate, with nearly all of the area remaining dry on Tuesday.

But then some changes show up. The summer ridge that has kept the area sizzling will be moving, taking up residency in the Southwest. This will turn the flow aloft out of the northwest across the eastern U.S., and that's all we'll need to end our current heat wave.

The cool front will arrive on Wednesday, likely with a round of scattered showers and thunderstorms. Now, it's still going to be hot on Wednesday. Temperatures will likely climb into the low to mid 90s with heat indices back above 100°.

The front will continue pushing through the region on Thursday, making for a cloudier day with scattered showers. Afternoon highs will remain below 90°, marking the beginning of a milder round of weather.

The relief from the heat will really kick in on Friday. There may still be a shot at showers to the south, but it looks like it will be turning sunnier and drier. In fact, it's not just temperatures that will be down, but humidity too. The upcoming weekend will feature sunshine, lower humidity, and below-normal temperatures. The mild spell probably won't stick around too much past next weekend, but the heat that follows likely won't last as long as the current round of toasty temperatures.
