Springfield Public Schools announces new cell phone policy

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. — Springfield Public Schools (SPS) announced a new cell phone policy for the 2025-26 school year as a part of the new state law.

Missouri Gov. Mike Kehoe signed Senate Bill 68 in July, which states students will not be allowed to use their personal cell phones “from the beginning of the school day until the end of the school day.”

In compliance with the state law, SPS students will not be permitted to use personal electronic devices during the school day. Devices must be turned off, stored in backpacks and remain out of sight for the entirety of the day. This also includes during breaks, lunch and study hall as well.

Personal devices are defined as cell phones, tablets, gaming devices, headphones/earbuds, and any other electronic devices used for communication, entertainment and accessing the internet—this includes smart watches.

The only exception is for students who need devices due to specific educational or health needs. An additional exception may allow device use in emergencies or for authorized educational purposes.

To learn more about the policy, you can visit the SPS website.
