Turning the page on the heat as we turn the page on the calendar

Hot weather continues to rule across the area, with most logging their 9th day in a row with highs over 90°. For Springfield, that's the longest streak since July of 2022.

Heat Advisories continue to blanket the region with an Extreme Heat Warning for Southeast Missouri into Northeast Arkansas. A dangerous combination of heat and humidity continues to drive heat index values well over 100°. The advisories will remain in effect through Wednesday when a big shift in the pattern arrives.

Looking at the short term, we're looking at another warm and quiet night followed by another hot and quiet day. Pop-up showers will be very few and far between, but they'll be around in the afternoon and early evening on Tuesday.

Wednesday is shaping up to be our pivot day. A cool front to the north will be advancing south, producing scattered showers and thunderstorms. These, in turn, will likely send their own boundaries south into the Ozarks. The heat will still be there, but there should be an uptick in rain chances Wednesday afternoon into the overnight.

The actual cool front will slip through on Thursday, generating more clouds and scattered showers, and thunderstorms. This will help keep afternoon highs below 90° since the middle of July.

The stormier pattern will provide rain for most areas, but totals will generally be under an inch, although a few spots could certainly see a few inches of rainfall. Stronger storms will produce frequent lightning and gusty winds.

August will arrive with less humidity and milder temperatures. Rain chances should be at a minimum through the weekend, but may go up by Monday as the front slips back to the north. The break from the heat will last through the weekend before temperatures climb next week.
